Quad-core laptops are here, do you really need the power?

Thinking about picking up a more powerful laptop this winter? New and improved quad-core processors were released by Intel and AMD in October, and they are rapidly being implemented into laptops for this season. Previously, these powerful processors were limited to desktop computers and a few high-end specialty laptops, now they may trend toward becoming the standard.

Quad-core processors are more expensive to produce than their dual-core counterparts, so they will more often be found in higher priced laptop models going for $1,000 or more. If you are looking to speed things up for next year, there is no real downside to upgrading to one of these new, more powerful processors implemented by the most popular computer brands like Acer, Asus, Dell and HP.

How the quad-core processors will speed up your work

You could think of your computer processor as the “brain” of your computer. If you were looking to upgrade the processor, there are two different ways to do that.

You could upgrade the processor to a higher speed. Commonly, processor speeds are measured in GHz (Gigahertz). A faster speed, (higher number) indicates faster processing capabilities. That means your computer can process information at a faster speed.

The other way a processor can be improved is by adding processing cores. Think of multiple cores as having multiple workers. Each worker, or “core” in this case, is assigned a different task. This allows the computer as a whole to complete the job at hand much quicker.

Multi-core processors have been out on the market since 2005, and some extremely powerful desktop processors may have up to 16 cores. In the past, applications were not optimized to take advantage of multi-core processing, like a job routine that had not been adapted to allow for multiple workers to collaborate. Because of this, multi-core processors were mostly utilized in high-end gaming computers that came with extremely high price tags.

Now, software companies have had a while to catch up. Multi-core processors are ubiquitous, and it is more than likely that the computer you are using at home or work is utilizing a dual core processor or more.

Where can I pick up one of these new laptops?

Well, first off, these are new, and we know what this means, hard to find. Good luck finding them on a store shelf. But, if you are willing to wait a bit, online ordering may be your best option.

If you are interested, check up on the ASUS ZenBook 3 Deluxe UX490UA or the HP Spectre x360. And keep an eye out this holiday season as more and more of these high-end laptops become much more popular in tech stores around the country.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Laptops

When weighing up the advantages and disadvantages of laptop computers, it’s important to bear in mind what you’re comparing them to and how you plan to use them for your business. Laptop computers are more portable than their desktop equivalents — a definite advantage for a mobile workforce — although not as portable as tablets. Laptops give you the power and flexibility of a desktop computer, where tablets may be limited in these areas.

Laptops give you the components of a desktop computer packed into a portable unit that you can take anywhere. Working on the move, away from the office or at a different desk is a lot more convenient when using a laptop than a desktop. However, in terms of size and weight, tablets offer even more portability than laptops. If you can live without a physical keyboard or have a Bluetooth keyboard paired and have all the apps you need to work, then a tablet device can be even more convenient than a laptop.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Where laptops have a distinct advantage over tablets is in their flexibility. In terms of external peripherals, from printers to external hard drives, anything that connects to a desktop computer can also connect to a laptop. There’s also the keyboard and optional mouse input methods, making it much easier to type for extended periods on a laptop than it is on a tablet. Laptops are typically much faster than tablets, which run only basic operating systems.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                While desktops, laptops and tablets all have the same core components in terms of processor, memory and graphics capabilities, as you move further along the portability scale, these components become increasingly less powerful. Components inside a laptop case typically run more slowly than those in a full desktop machine, and there’s no room to install extra graphics cards, sound cards or capture cards. Generally speaking, laptops are still significantly more powerful than tablets and almost up to the level of desktops in capabilities. If you need the most powerful computers possible — for video editing, game development or larger screens, for example — then desktops are probably the way to go, but high-end laptops are almost equally capable.

Laptops the Art of Technology That Counts A Lot

In the modern world, the desktops have been very much replaced by the development of the laptops. The laptops are easy to carry and are of less weight thus very handy to handle. Due to this reason, many people prefer to buy laptops instead of desktops.

But once you own a laptop it is not very easy to maintain. It may fall somewhere resulting in serious damage to the surface, or the cord may become frayed or the fan may be clogged resulting in overheating. Also, the system may get unduly slowed down due to fragmentation of the data. All these things need adequate repair.

If the fan of your laptop has failed or gone wrong you will have the complaint of overheating. Also the diagnosis is easy if you find that the fan has become very noisy or that your system has become too hot. Also, you can see that the laptop shuts down suddenly and then restarts. If this is your problem then the best solution to it is cleaning the grill of your fan. You can easily do it with the help of brushes or toothpicks. If this does not help, use a vacuum cleaner for the purpose. Sometimes the damage to the fan is beyond repair in this case plug off the power supply of your computer and put it upside down. With the help of the screwdriver remove the lower casing. Now locate the fan of your laptop. Once you have done it, unscrew it from its bed and replace it with a new one. Now place the lid back too and you can enjoy normal function of your laptop.

The other problem that is commonly seen is that the cord of the laptop gets frayed because of frequent plugging and unplugging. This problem can be temporarily solved by placing a sticking tape on the damaged part. The other good and less ugly alternative is covering it with a sealant. Sealant not only acts to seal and cover the damaged part but also as an insulator to ward off any bad current. Always repair your cord in time to prevent any big and lasting damage. If the case of the laptop has broken or cracked somewhere you can easily fix it up with the help of putty and a knife. The putty will stay in place and give a smooth finish. You can paint the place later when the place has dried. Paint should match the color of the laptop. Continue reading
